Basic Infertility

UMIC offers a full spectrum of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to help you conceive including, clomiphene and HMG ovarian stimulation, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), blastocyst transfer, assisted hatching, egg donation and Pre-Implantation Genetic diagnosis (PGD).

The first step in overcoming infertility is to pinpoint the obstacles to conception. Your diagnosis could be any of the following or a combination of several factors:

Ovulatory dysfunction: Normally you produce one egg every month. If you are not ovulating regularly, you have ovulatory dysfunction. The most common cause is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Other conditions such as thyroid dysfunction or high prolactin, among others could cause ovulatory dysfunction Your doctor will discuss with you your different treatment options, including clomiphene induction, injectable medications and intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Tubal disease: If your tubes are blocked, you will not be able to achieve pregnancy naturally; you are also at high risk for ectopic pregnancy. The most common cause for tubal disease is pelvic infection.  Your treatment could include tubal surgery, in vitro fertilization (IVF), or both.  Your doctor will further explain your options.

Male subfertility or infertility: There are several factors for this condition, including infection, trauma, genetics, etc. In most of the cases, through history, physical examination and semen analysis can pinpoint the diagnosis.  There are several treatment options depending on the severity of the condition.  This includes intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) with Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Endometriosis: endometriosis is a condition when the lining of the uterus get stuck to your pelvic organs. Endometriosis can cause pain during your period and during intercourse. It also can cause infertility.  Your doctor will discuss with you your treatment options.  This could include surgery, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), or any combination of the above.

Advanced age: Reproductive ability decreases with age. We see a significant decline around the age of 40. Some blood test can tell us whether you are a candidate for infertility treatment and what are your different options.  Your doctor will discuss with you different treatments including ovarian stimulation and intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Unexplained: In 5-10% of infertility patients after the initial work up, there is no definite diagnosis for you infertility. There are many different options, including intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) with or without Intracytoplastmic sperm injection (ICSI); you doctor will discuss them with you in details.

Fibroids: Fibroids is a common condition that can present in many different ways. Infertility is one of these presentations. Not all fibroids can cause infertility, but some do. Your doctor will discuss with you your treatment options, which include surgery.

Pelvic adhesion: This condition usually develops after surgery and/or infection. Surgical treatment or in vitro fertilization (IVF) can help with this condition.

Premature Ovarian Failure (POF): If your ovaries stop functioning completely before the age of 40 then you have POF. We first will try to find out the cause of your POF and discuss the different treatment options with you.  Oocyte donation and in vitro fertilization (IVF) is usually the most successful treatment option.
