Postmenopausal Care

Women live at least one third of their lives after menopause, when their ovaries cease to ovulate and can no longer produce the female hormone, estrogen. There is much controversy today as to whether or not menopausal women should receive female hormone replacement therapy (HRT); if HRT is chosen then the issues still in question relate to  which  kind of medication, how much and for how long. However, the fact remains that with the proper treatment plan, the problems of menopause, such as insomnia, hot flushes, painful intercourse, osteoporosis and risk of bone fractures may be prevented or reduced.

In addition, there is substantial medical literature that supports the opinion of experts in the field who believe that HRT, if started early enough in menopause, can actually reduce the development of cardiovascular disease. Also, prescribing non-oral forms of estrogen may decrease HRT's potential complication of blood clots.

Since women will differ as to their individual health status, family history and clinical symptoms, it is important to evaluate and counsel each of these patients according to her specific medical profile. It is our intent to give these women the proper objective information so that they can make a well informed decision and be comfortable with whatever treatment course they choose.

During the visit, the doctor will explain the different treatment options available along with their risks and benefits, so that the patient can make an educated and proper decision.
